A brief history | First European presence in 1511 with the storming of the city of Malacca by the Portuguese. In 1641 the Dutch in turn take possession of the city. In 1824 the Dutch finally ous Malacca to English. From 1874, the British protectorate settles. On 31 August 1957, Malaysia declared independence. | |

Don'ts | Although the Malaysian Islam is more tolerant on the whole, a dress modesty is required (women should avoid to reveal thighs and shoulders off beaches). The Malays attach great importance to social behavior and conduct dress which, for them, mark the respect for others. They do not automatically shakes hands, a nod and a smile are enough, especially when you're a man and your interlocutor is a Muslim woman. Never finger-point anything, in particular a person. Always remove your shoes before entering a home or a place of worship and never touch the head of the people. We must avoid eating with the left hand, which is considered unclean. It is important to never seeming to make fun of someone. Sultans are very respected by the population; so do not criticize them, and avoid judging national Policy Drinking: zero tolerance Malaysian court sentences to six lashes and one year in jail any Muslim caught drinking alcohol. This punishment does not apply to non-Malaysians. |
